What Is Hermeticism?

Hermeticism is one of the oldest and most influential philosophical traditions in the Western world—yet it remains widely misunderstood. It is not a religion. It is not New Age mysticism. The core texts are the Corpus Hermeticum, a collection of philosophical dialogues compiled in antiquity; the Emerald Tablet, a cryptic but influential alchemical text; and various commentaries and elaborations including The Kybalion, which systematized the Seven Hermetic Principles in the early 20th century.

These texts predate Christianity. They influenced Islamic and Jewish mysticism. They were recovered and championed during the European Renaissance by figures like Marsilio Ficino and Giordano Bruno, who saw Hermetic philosophy as the intellectual bridge between pagan wisdom and Christian theology. Isaac Newton—arguably the architect of modern science—was a devoted student of alchemy and Hermetic philosophy. John Dee, the Elizabethan mathematician and astrologer, grounded his work in Hermetic principles. Freemasonry explicitly incorporates Hermetic teachings.
