As Above,
So Below
Hermeticism—the hidden thread connecting cosmic events to personal transformation, astronomy to alchemy, and the macrocosm to the microcosm.
What Is Hermeticism?
Hermeticism is one of the oldest and most influential philosophical traditions in the Western world—yet it remains widely misunderstood. It is not a religion. It is not New Age mysticism. It is a coherent, intellectually rigorous system of thought that has shaped Western civilization from the Renaissance through the Scientific Revolution and into modernity.
The tradition is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus ("Hermes the Thrice-Great"), a legendary figure syncretized from the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek messenger Hermes. Whether Hermes Trismegistus was a historical person or a symbolic archetype remains contested—but the body of work attributed to him is very real and enduring. The core texts are the Corpus Hermeticum, a collection of philosophical dialogues compiled in antiquity; the Emerald Tablet, a cryptic but influential alchemical text; and various commentaries and elaborations including The Kybalion, which systematized the Seven Hermetic Principles in the early 20th century.
These texts predate Christianity. They influenced Islamic and Jewish mysticism. They were recovered and championed during the European Renaissance by figures like Marsilio Ficino and Giordano Bruno, who saw Hermetic philosophy as the intellectual bridge between pagan wisdom and Christian theology. Isaac Newton—arguably the architect of modern science—was a devoted student of alchemy and Hermetic philosophy. John Dee, the Elizabethan mathematician and astrologer, grounded his work in Hermetic principles. Freemasonry explicitly incorporates Hermetic teachings.
The central claim of Hermeticism is deceptively simple: the universe is fundamentally mental in nature. Reality is not divided into spirit and matter, sacred and profane, cosmic and human. Rather, all scales of existence operate by the same laws. The same principles that govern the motion of planets govern the psychology of individuals. The same forces that shape world history shape the unfolding of a single human life. This is not metaphor. This is a systematic claim about the structure of reality itself.
Hermeticism offers a worldview in which mapping the sky to history, or calculating a birth chart to understand a person, is not superstition—it is applied philosophy rooted in a defensible metaphysics. It is precisely because Hermeticism claims that the macrocosm and microcosm operate by identical laws that Cosmos Daily exists at all.
The Seven Hermetic Principles
The Kybalion distills Hermetic philosophy into Seven Principles. These are not arbitrary rules but rather observations about how reality is structured. They form the intellectual bedrock of Cosmos Daily.
All is Mind. The universe is not material in its essence, but rather mental. Consciousness pervades all existence. What we perceive as physical reality is a manifestation of universal Mind expressing itself across infinite scales.
As above, so below; as below, so above. The laws that govern the macrocosm (planets, cosmic cycles, historical epochs) are identical to the laws governing the microcosm (individual minds, personal development, life cycles). This is the cornerstone principle. Everything corresponds to everything else.
Everything is in vibration. Nothing rests. Matter, energy, thought—all exist along a spectrum of vibratory frequency. The difference between a stone and a star, or between confusion and clarity, is a difference in vibratory rate. Consciousness itself vibrates.
Everything has poles; everything has pairs of opposites. North and South, light and dark, expansion and contraction. Opposites are identical in nature but different in degree. By understanding polarity, one can transmute one quality into another.
Everything flows and ebbs. Everything has tides. The pendulum swings in all things. In history, in personal life, in the cosmos—rhythmic cycles are fundamental. Understanding rhythm allows one to predict tides and exploit swing points.
Every cause has an effect; every effect has a cause. Nothing happens by chance. There is no accident in the universe. What appears random is simply causality at scales we do not yet perceive. This principle underlies all law and order.
Gender is in everything. Masculine and feminine principles—creative and receptive, expressive and receptive—are universal. Gender manifests not as biological sex, but as complementary polarities operating at every scale. Procreation (physical, mental, spiritual) requires both.
These principles are not beliefs. They are observations encoded into a philosophical system. The principle of Correspondence is the key: it is what makes it possible to read the sky as a language that speaks to human events and human development. Without Correspondence, Cosmos Daily would be meaningless. With it, mapping planetary alignments to world events becomes an exercise in applied philosophy.
That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above, to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.
The Emerald TabletHermeticism and Mundane Astrology
Mundane astrology—the study of planetary cycles and celestial events as they correlate with historical and geopolitical phenomena—is not astrology in the fortune-telling sense. It is astrology as Hermetic methodology. The Celestial History Archive on the Cosmos Daily homepage is an exercise in mapping the macrocosm (planetary movements, eclipse cycles, conjunctions of outer planets) to the macrocosm expressed at the human scale (wars, pandemics, technological breakthroughs, cultural shifts).
Without Hermeticism, this enterprise is indefensible. One might observe correlations and be struck by their consistency. But why should the motion of planets relate to the politics of nations? Why should an eclipse in Capricorn synchronize with a collapse in financial systems? Why should a Saturn-Pluto conjunction precede a global pandemic? These patterns are real—verifiable in the historical record—but the mechanism remains mysterious.
Hermeticism provides the intellectual framework. If, as the principle of Correspondence asserts, the laws governing the macrocosm are identical to the laws governing every other scale of manifestation, then the cosmos is not divorced from history. It is not separated from human affairs by some metaphysical wall. Rather, planetary cycles—which are objective, measurable, mathematical phenomena—express themselves in world affairs because the same causal principles operate at all scales. The planetary cycles are like the tides that move the ocean at the macro level and move blood through the body at the micro level. One law. Multiple expressions.
A Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn (the sign of authority, government, structure) in January 2020 was followed within weeks by the recognition of the COVID-19 pandemic. Did Saturn-Pluto cause the pandemic? The Hermetic view does not claim simple causation. Rather, it claims Correspondence: the same structural principles that create a tight alignment of the slowest, heaviest planets in the sign of institutional authority express themselves in a global shock to institutional systems. The timing is not coincidence. It is resonance—the expression of identical laws at different scales.
This is why Cosmos Daily's mission is coherent. We are not reading the future into random celestial events. We are documenting a language—planetary cycles expressed as historical events—that has been observed and refined for millennia. The Hermetic framework makes the observations philosophically coherent.
Hermeticism and Personal Transformation
The same principle that makes mundane astrology coherent also makes personal astrology—the reading of individual birth charts—philosophically defensible. The Cosmic Making Engine does not predict your fortune. It maps your personal correspondences. It reads the configuration of planets at your birth as a statement about the psychological and spiritual archetypal forces active in your incarnation.
The fundamental Hermetic insight is this: you are not separate from the cosmos. You are the cosmos in miniature. Every atom in your body was forged in the heart of a star. Every element that constitutes your consciousness participates in the same vibratory frequencies that govern galaxies. Your birth is not a random accident occurring on a date chosen by chance. The celestial configuration at your birth encodes a map of the macrocosmic forces expressing themselves in the microcosm of your individual existence.
In the moment of your first breath, the Sun occupies a specific degree of the zodiac. The Moon occupies another. The planets distribute themselves across the sky in a unique geometric pattern that will never be precisely repeated for billions of years. This configuration is not symbolic happenstance. It is your personal correspondence—the sky's statement about which archetypal forces are active in your individual unfolding.
A person born under a Sun-Saturn square, for example, is born into a personal situation where will and authority (Sun) are in tension with limitation and contraction (Saturn). This is not a curse. It is not a destiny that cannot be changed. Rather, it is a fundamental tension that shapes the person's early life and offers a specific path for psychological development. By understanding this correspondence, a person can work consciously with their own nature rather than against it.
The Cosmic Making Engine's reading of your birth chart is applied Hermetic philosophy. We are not telling you who you are. We are mapping your correspondences—showing you how the macrocosmic forces active at your birth express themselves in your personal psychology, your spiritual development, and your potential. The planetary positions at your birth are a language written by the cosmos itself. The reading is a translation of that language from astronomical fact into psychological and spiritual insight.
This is why the Cosmic Making Engine includes calculations of your Sabian Symbol, your Hermetic Virtues, your position on the Tree of Life, and your Bazi Four Pillars. Each system is a different language for stating the same truth: the correspondence between the macrocosm and the microcosm. A person born under a particular Sabian Symbol is not bound by it—they are oriented by it. The reading empowers you to work consciously with your own nature.
Know thyself, and thou shalt know the Universe and God. For the Universe is not external to you, but is contained within you. You are a microcosm.
Corpus Hermeticum, FragmentThe Hermetic Virtues
Classical philosophy identified four cardinal virtues: Prudence (wise discernment), Justice (right relationship), Temperance (balance), and Fortitude (courage and endurance). The Hermetic tradition reinterprets these virtues not as moral commandments but as fundamental principles of psychological and spiritual development. More importantly, the Hermetic view sees these virtues as corresponding to planetary energies and zodiacal positions.
Prudence is Mercury—the discrimination between useful and useless, true and false, real and illusory. Prudence is the capacity to see clearly and discern rightly. In your birth chart, the position of Mercury and its aspects reveal your natural capacity for clear perception and discernment.
Justice is Venus—the principle of right relationship, balance, exchange, and harmony. Justice is not punishment but rather the restoration of equilibrium. In your chart, Venus and its aspects reveal your capacity for fair dealing, your values, and your natural way of creating harmony in relationship.
Temperance is Saturn—the principle of measure, boundaries, structure, and restraint. Temperance is not repression but rather appropriate modulation. Saturn teaches the wisdom of knowing what to do and what not to do, when to advance and when to hold back. Saturn in your chart reveals the areas where you must learn discipline and develop mastery.
Fortitude is Mars—the principle of will, courage, drive, and perseverance. Fortitude is the capacity to face difficulty, to persist in the face of resistance, to act decisively. Mars in your chart reveals your courage, your passion, your willingness to confront obstacles directly.
But the Cosmic Making Engine goes further. It maps not only the planetary positions themselves but also their interactions—their aspects and their placements in the houses. A person with a strong Mercury might have natural prudence, but if Mercury is under difficult aspects, that person may need to develop their discernment more consciously. A person with Venus in a weak position may struggle initially with justice and harmony but may develop extraordinary capacity in these areas through conscious work.
The Hermetic Virtues reading is not flattery or determinism. It is a clear-eyed assessment of which archetypal forces are naturally strong in you, which are challenging, and which offer your greatest potential for development. By understanding your personal Hermetic Virtues, you can align your efforts with your deepest nature and accelerate your own transformation.
Why Cosmos Daily Exists
Cosmos Daily is built on a single Hermetic insight: the macro and the micro are not separate. The cosmic and the personal are two expressions of identical laws. The celestial history of the world and the celestial history of your birth are chapters of the same book, written in the same language.
The Celestial History Archive documents the macrocosm—the sky's influence on world events. The Cosmic Making Engine reads the microcosm—the sky's influence on your individual development. These are not two different systems. They are two applications of the same principle: Correspondence.
This is a radical claim. It says that you can understand yourself more deeply by understanding the cosmos, and you can understand the cosmos more deeply by understanding yourself. It says that the patterns that govern the rise and fall of empires also govern the stages of human psychological development. It says that the planetary cycles that shape history also shape the unfolding of your life.
This is not fatalism. Nothing in Hermeticism is deterministic. The seventh principle—Gender, or the creative interplay of complementary opposites—ensures that causality is bidirectional. Planetary cycles express themselves in world events, but consciousness also shapes how those cycles manifest. Your birth chart reveals your archetypal nature, but you are not bound by it. You are liberated by understanding it. Consciousness that understands its own structure can reshape that structure.
Cosmos Daily exists to document these correspondences with scholarly rigor and to offer readings that empower you to work consciously with your own nature. We are not here to take your agency. We are here to reflect it back to you so that you can exercise it more skillfully, more consciously, more fully.
The cosmos is not separate from you. You are the cosmos becoming conscious of itself.
The Other Five Systems
The Cosmic Making Engine cross-references six ancient systems into one reading. Each system illuminates a different dimension of your chart.
