Your Stage in the Great Work & Native Hermetic Virtues
Discover where you stand in the alchemical transformation of the self. Based on your birth data and age, learn your current stage in the four-phase Great Work, and uncover your native Hermetic Virtue—the power you were born with—and your developmental virtue, what you're here to cultivate.
In Hermetic tradition, the Sphinx guards the threshold of the mysteries with four powers: To Know, To Will, To Dare, and To Keep Silent. These are not merely intellectual concepts but embodied capacities that develop through the stages of the Great Work.
Your native virtue is determined by counting the elements in your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant signs:
Hermetic alchemy is the spiritual science attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the "thrice-great," legendary founder of Western esoteric wisdom. Unlike the chemistry of laboratory alchemy, Hermetic alchemy is the inner Work of the soul—the transformation of consciousness itself through carefully structured stages.
The Great Work (Magnum Opus) consists of four stages, each corresponding to a phase of spiritual transformation and aligned with the Saturn cycles of human life:
Nigredo (The Blackening): The stage of dissolution and shadow work. Everything false must be burned away in the crucible of honest self-examination. Without this necessary darkness, transformation cannot begin. Associated with Saturn's first cycle (ages 0–28).
Albedo (The Whitening): Purification and clarity. The dust of Nigredo is washed away, and consciousness begins to differentiate truth from illusion. The lunar principle becomes dominant. Spans the first Saturn return through midlife (ages 29–43).
Citrinitas (The Yellowing): The dawning of solar consciousness. The integrated self emerges, no longer a victim of circumstance but a conscious agent. The Work begins to produce visible gold. Occurs during the approach to the second Saturn return (ages 44–58).
Rubedo (The Reddening): The completion of the Great Work—the marriage of all opposites. The Philosopher's Stone is achieved not as a possession but as a state of being: the ability to transform whatever one touches because one has been fully transformed oneself. Life becomes the Work itself (ages 59+).
Saturn's orbital period of approximately 29 years creates natural gateways for transformation. The first Saturn return (age 28–29) marks the dissolution of youth and the beginning of adult consciousness. The second Saturn return (age 58–59) represents the transition from personal ambition to transpersonal purpose. The alchemical stages are calibrated to these cosmic cycles, suggesting that inner spiritual development is mirrored by outer planetary mechanics.
The four Hermetic Virtues represent the core powers needed to walk the Path. Often associated with the four powers of the Sphinx, they form a complete practice:
Your native virtue (determined by your birth chart's elemental balance) is a strength you've always carried. Your developmental virtue—the opposite element—is the power you're here to cultivate. Together, they form the complete expression of the Hermetic path within your lifetime.
