XIX · THE SUN

The Sun.

Sun · Clarity and Vitality

A small child rides a white horse beneath a great sun. Sunflowers behind a wall. A red banner trailing. The world is simple again.

The Sun is the deck's card of direct vision. After the Moon's distortion, the light arrives without filter. Pamela Colman Smith painted a naked child on a white horse — the symbol of innocence after the long passage. Nothing is hidden. Nothing has to be projected. The card the deck draws when the question is about clarity, vitality, and joy that has earned itself.

The Sun, upright

An upright Sun names the chapter is good and you can see it. Not a fragile good, not a maybe-this-is-working — a real, visible, present good. The querent's situation is genuinely working out, and the cards are naming that they are allowed to enjoy it. The Sun is one of the most unambiguously favourable cards in the deck.

Read this card as the cards' permission to be where you are. If you have been bracing for the next problem, the card is asking you to stop bracing for a moment. The sun is out. The horse is white. The child is laughing. Enjoy it without flinching — it is allowed.

The Sun is also the card of visibility done well. Whatever the querent is doing is being seen, and the seeing is favourable. Promotions, public success, recognition. The card is the deck's confirmation that what is being shown is what is actually true.

The Sun, reversed

Reversed Sun is delayed clarity, over-optimism, or joy that hasn't yet arrived. Not the absence of the good — just the not-yet-here-ness. The reversed Sun in a reading often signals that the querent is close, and that closeness is sometimes harder than distance. Stay the course.

Second reversal: visibility gone wrong. The querent is being seen for the wrong reasons, or seen too brightly for what they are ready to handle. The card asks for proportion.

Astrological correspondence

The Sun corresponds to the Sun — the centre of the chart, the principle of vitality, identity, and conscious will. Leo-ruled, but every chart has a Sun, and this card is about its full expression. Read The Sun as the moment your natal Sun is unobstructed — Sun transits returning to your natal Sun (your birthday) often carry this card's energy.

If your chart features a prominent Sun — Sun on an angle, in the 1st or 10th house, well-aspected — The Sun is one of your archetypal cards. Leo natives carry it strongly.

When you draw The Sun

It is allowed to be good. Whatever the situation is, the cards are confirming that it is genuinely working, that you can see it clearly, and that joy is appropriate. If you have been carrying anxiety about whether this will hold, the card is the cards saying it will, for now, for this chapter. Stop holding your breath.

If you are in the middle of doubt or confusion when this card appears, take it as a horizon line. The clarity is closer than you think. The sun rises whether you expect it or not.
