Julius Caesar Assassinated — Republic Dies

Comet (Sidus Iulium) and Solar Eclipse

Julius Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March by senators led by Brutus and Cassius. His death did not save the Republic but instead triggered civil wars that produced the Roman Empire. A comet visible for seven days after his death — the Sidus Iulium — was interpreted as Caesar's soul ascending to the gods, cementing his deification and his adopted heir Octavian's political legitimacy.

A solar eclipse preceded Caesar's assassination, and the spectacular comet that appeared during his funeral games was visible to all of Rome. Ancient sources universally interpreted these celestial events as divine commentary on Caesar's death. The eclipse symbolized the death of the Republic's greatest figure, while the comet announced the divine destiny of his successor and the empire to come.
