Solar arc direction is a predictive astrology technique developed and refined in the 20th century, particularly by German astrologer Reinhold Ebertin and the Hamburg School. The rule could not be simpler: every planet in your natal chart moves forward through the zodiac at the same rate as your Sun.
Your Sun moves about one degree per day on average. So by the Sun's arc, each planet in your chart moves about one degree per year of life. At age 30, every natal planet — Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and the angles — has shifted approximately 30 degrees forward from its birth position. At age 45, every planet has shifted 45 degrees forward. The Sun and every other planet move together at the same rate.
This is not literally what the planets are doing in the sky. The actual Saturn is not 30 degrees ahead of where it was at your birth when you are 30 — it has only moved through one full orbit. Solar arc is a symbolic technique: a structured way of advancing your chart through time to see what aspects unfold between the directed positions and the natal positions.
Age equals degree. The simplest predictive rule in astrology — and one of the most accurate.
To find a solar arc directed position, take the natal degree of any planet and add the person's age in degrees.
Example 1. Your natal Saturn is at 10° Capricorn. You are 25 years old. Solar arc directed Saturn is at 10° + 25° = 35° from the start of Capricorn. Capricorn ends at 30°, so directed Saturn is at 5° Aquarius.
Example 2. Your natal Sun is at 18° Leo. You are 47 years old. Solar arc directed Sun is at 18° + 47° = 65° from the start of Leo. 30° takes us to the start of Virgo. Another 30° takes us to the start of Libra. So we have 65 - 60 = 5° into Libra. Directed Sun is at 5° Libra.
Example 3. Your natal Midheaven is at 22° Aries. You are 36 years old. Solar arc directed Midheaven is at 22° + 36° = 58° from Aries start = 28° Taurus.
This sounds tedious but takes seconds in practice. Modern chart software calculates the whole directed chart instantly. The skill is in seeing which aspects between the directed and natal chart matter most.
Calculate your solar arc: Run your free birth chart and apply the "+ age in degrees" rule to each planet. Most chart software supports solar arc directly.
The predictive force of solar arc comes from contacts between directed positions and natal planets. Specifically, conjunctions, oppositions, and squares between a directed planet and a natal planet (or vice versa) are considered the most loaded.
A conjunction occurs when the directed planet reaches the exact degree of a natal planet. An opposition occurs when the directed planet reaches 180° from a natal planet. A square occurs at 90° from a natal planet.
The orb — the allowed wobble around exactness — is unusually tight for solar arc. Most practitioners consider hits within 1° of exact to be the meaningful window. Beyond that, the directed planet is "approaching" or "separating" but not in active contact.
Because each planet moves one degree per year, a solar arc hit lasts roughly a year. The exact aspect may be active for only a few months, but the year of the hit is the year of the predicted theme.
Solar arc Saturn reaching natal Sun. A year of mature accountability, career structure, possible limitation or loss of vitality, but also potentially crystallization of authority and durable accomplishment. Often correlates with major career thresholds.
Solar arc Jupiter reaching natal Venus. A year of expansion in love, beauty, values, or finances. Often correlates with significant partnerships, creative breakthroughs, or financial windfall — with the risk of over-extension.
Solar arc Pluto reaching natal Moon. A year of deep emotional transformation. Often correlates with a death, a major personal upheaval, the surfacing of buried family material, or the dissolution of an emotional pattern that no longer serves.
Solar arc Uranus reaching natal Midheaven. A year of sudden public-role shift. Often correlates with unexpected career changes, sudden visibility, or the abandonment of a path that had felt fixed.
Solar arc Sun reaching natal Saturn. A year of mature self-expression, accepting responsibility, the consolidation of a long-built thing. Often correlates with the moment one's career or public role finally lands its mature form.
The specificity of these predictions is what gives solar arc its reputation. The technique cannot tell you the literal event — that depends on circumstances, free will, the rest of the chart — but it can tell you the year, and the theme, with remarkable precision.
Solar arc is rarely used alone. Most practitioners combine it with three other timing techniques.
Transits describe what is happening in the actual sky right now relative to your natal chart. Transits run constantly and produce the texture of any given week or month. Use transits for daily and monthly resolution.
Secondary progressions — especially the progressed Moon — describe the slow movement of the inner self. Use progressions for emotional season and inner-cycle resolution.
Solar arc describes the year-by-year unfolding of the directed chart and identifies the specific years when major life themes converge. Use solar arc for annual-resolution prediction and to flag the unusually significant years of a decade.
Combined, the three techniques produce a layered picture: transits show the weather, progressions show the inner season, solar arc shows the milestone years. The most skilled practitioners read all three together.
Solar arc has no direct equivalent in Chinese Bazi or Vedic astrology, but the underlying intuition — that life has predictable annual milestones — is recognized in both systems. The Vedic Vimshottari Dasha cycle, for example, assigns specific planetary periods to each year of life in a structured 120-year framework. The Bazi annual pillar (流年) describes each year's energetic signature. Solar arc is the Western analog: a symbolic system for marking the unique character of each year.
In Hermetic Alchemy, solar arc corresponds to the principle that time itself is the alchemical agent. The Great Work unfolds across a lifetime, and each year has a specific quality, a specific operation underway. Solar arc maps that unfolding.
Solar arc direction is the most underused major predictive technique in modern Western astrology. The rule is brutally simple: age equals degree. The accuracy is striking. The skill is in interpretation, not calculation. For anyone serious about astrological prediction, learning to read your own solar arc is one of the highest-leverage moves available.
