VIII · STRENGTH

Strength.

Leo · Inner Courage

A woman in white robes gently closes a lion's mouth. Above her head, the lemniscate of infinity. The wildness is not fought. It is befriended.

Strength is the deck's card of soft mastery. Pamela Colman Smith painted a slight woman with a great lion, and the woman is the one in command — not through force but through the obvious calm of someone who has already done the inner work. The lemniscate hovering above her links her to The Magician; this is the same mastered energy, turned now toward the wild part of the self. The card the deck draws when the question is about holding your nerve.

Strength, upright

An upright Strength names courage that does not need to perform itself. The querent has the power required for the situation; the work is not summoning it but using it correctly. The lion in the image is not a threat — it is the querent's own raw vitality, anger, passion, fear. Strength asks them not to suppress it and not to be ruled by it. The third way is to befriend it. The lion comes when called.

In recovery, illness, or hardship readings, Strength is the cards naming that the querent will get through this — not because the difficulty is small but because their capacity is real. In conflict readings, Strength is the discipline to respond rather than react. In creative readings, it is the patience to keep working through doubt without abandoning the work.

Strength, reversed

Reversed Strength is self-doubt, overwhelm, or the wild part of the self in command. The lion is loose. The reading is naming that the querent is currently reactive rather than centred, and that the situation is being driven by the unmanaged part of them rather than the part that knows better.

Second reversal: force misread as strength. The querent is gripping the lion too hard. Suppression instead of integration. The card asks: are you mastering the energy, or merely sitting on top of it?

Astrological correspondence

Strength corresponds to Leo — the fixed fire sign of the heart and the inner sovereign. Sun-ruled. Read Strength as Leo in its most disciplined form: not the dramatic Leo seeking the stage but the regal Leo who knows the room is already theirs and does not need to perform it.

If your chart features prominent Leo — Leo Sun, Moon, or Ascendant, or a stellium — Strength is one of your archetypal cards. Also relevant: a strong 5th house, a well-aspected Sun, or current transits through Leo.

When you draw Strength

You have what the situation requires. The card is not asking you to be braver — you already are. It is asking you to act from that bravery rather than wait until it arrives. The thing you have been calling overwhelm is more often unprocessed energy than missing capacity. Strength's instruction is to engage with the lion. Stroke its mane. Close its mouth gently. Continue.

If you have been bracing yourself for the situation, Strength is the cards saying you can stop bracing. The bracing is more tiring than the situation itself.

Read Strength through your Leo.

The Cosmos Daily Daily Tarot reads each card through your Leo placements, your Sun, your 5th house, and your Bazi day pillar. Strength through your specific chart is different.
