XIV · TEMPERANCE

Temperance.

Sagittarius · Patient Integration

A winged angel stands at the edge of a stream, one foot on water, one on land. Two chalices in hand, pouring water from one to the other in a steady arc.

Temperance is the deck's card of slow alchemical mixing. The angel does not rush the pour. The water arcs steadily between the two cups, neither slowing nor accelerating. Pamela Colman Smith painted a path leading to a crown of light in the distance. The card the deck draws when the question is about blending what cannot be rushed.

Temperance, upright

An upright Temperance names the work of mixing two things that need each other. Work and rest. Confidence and humility. Holding and releasing. The thing The Lovers chose, Temperance integrates over time. This is the card of patient recovery, of long-haul integration, of the kind of progress that does not announce itself.

Read this card as the cards' instruction to continue mixing. Whatever you are doing — therapy, training, learning a craft, healing a relationship — the work is the slow blending of opposites. Do not look for the leap. The pour is the practice.

Temperance, reversed

Reversed Temperance is excess, impatience, or imbalance. The cups are spilling. The querent is pouring too fast, drinking too much, working too hard, swinging between extremes. The angel's lesson is forgotten: the rate of pour is the practice. Read this card as the cards naming a place the querent's life has become too much one thing.

Second reversal: refused integration. The querent is keeping two parts of their life separate that need to be in conversation. Work and family. Body and mind. Old self and new self. The card asks for the mixing.

Temperance in a reading

Astrological correspondence

Temperance corresponds to Sagittarius — the mutable fire sign of long arcs, meaning-making, and the patient pursuit of distant goals. Jupiter-ruled. Read Temperance as Sagittarius in its mature, integrating form — not the restless seeker but the elder who has learned to walk slowly toward what matters.

If your chart features prominent Sagittarius — Sagittarius Sun, Moon, or Ascendant, or a stellium — Temperance is one of your archetypal cards. Also relevant: prominent Jupiter, a strong 9th house, or current Jupiter transits.

When you draw Temperance

Keep doing the work. The thing you are pouring will integrate, but not on a schedule you can rush. The angel's gift is the steady rate. If you have been doubting the slow progress, this card is the cards saying the slow progress is the progress. If you have been swinging between extremes, the card is asking you to find the middle pour and stay with it.

If you are healing from something — a loss, an illness, a betrayal — Temperance is one of the kinder cards to draw. It does not promise speed. It promises that the mixing is real.

Read Temperance through your Sagittarius.
