How to read your own floor plan
A birth chart answers two different questions at once, and most people only ever hear the first. The signs describe how a planet behaves: a Mars in Libra fights differently from a Mars in Aries. The houses describe where that behaviour lands in an actual life. Mars in the sixth shows up in your work and your body; the same Mars in the seventh shows up in your marriage. Two people can share every sign placement and live completely different lives because the houses moved.
That is why the houses need a birth time and the signs do not. The rising sign moves roughly one degree every four minutes, and the rising sign is what sets the whole frame. Everything below follows from it.
Whole Sign houses, and why we use them
This page uses Whole Sign houses, the system the Hellenistic astrologers used and the one most traditional astrologers have returned to. The rule is simple: your entire rising sign is the first house, the next sign is the second, and so on around the wheel. Each house holds exactly one sign, which keeps the rulership chains clean and readable. Quadrant systems like Placidus slice the houses by time instead, which can stretch one house across two signs and leave another sign with no house at all. Neither is wrong, but Whole Sign is the clearer teacher, and it is what the reading is built on.
The ruler is the part nobody explains
Every house is governed by the planet that rules the sign sitting on it. That ruling planet lives somewhere else in your chart, and where it lives tells you where that part of life actually gets decided. If your second house of money carries Taurus, Venus rules it. If your Venus sits in the ninth house, your resources move through travel, study, publishing, or belief. This single link is what turns a list of placements into a map of a life, and it is why a chart with an empty second house can still describe someone's entire relationship to money.
Loud houses and quiet ones
Where a house sits on the wheel decides how loudly its planets act. The four angular houses are the corners of the chart and the most visible.
An empty house is not an empty life
This is the correction that matters most, and the one beginners are most often denied. There are ten planets and twelve houses, so most charts leave six or more houses without a single planet. That is arithmetic, not fate. An empty seventh house does not mean no partnership; an empty tenth does not mean no career. An empty house is read through its ruler, and the ruler always has an address. If anyone has ever told you an empty house means an absence, they were reading the chart wrong.
The classical names, translated honestly
The old texts gave some houses grim names: the sixth was Bad Fortune, the twelfth Bad Spirit, the eighth the Gate of Hades. Those names come from a world where illness and debt were mortal risks. Read plainly, the sixth is the house of craft and the daily maintenance of a body, the eighth is where your life is financially and emotionally entangled with someone else's, and the twelfth is what happens off stage: sleep, solitude, and the things you carry but do not say. We use the classical names because they are part of the tradition, and we translate them because fear is not information.
