2027 Full Moon and New Moon Calendar

2027 has 12 Full Moons and 13 New Moons. The first New Moon is on January 7 in Capricorn and the first Full Moon on January 22 in Leo. Five of the year’s lunations are eclipses: an annular solar eclipse on February 6, the total solar eclipse on August 2, and penumbral lunar eclipses on February 20, July 18 and August 17.

There is no calendar-month Blue Moon in 2027, but the May 20 Full Moon is a seasonal Blue Moon, the third of four Full Moons between the March equinox and the June solstice. August has two New Moons, so August 31 is a Black Moon. And the year repeats two signs: two Full Moons fall in Scorpio (April 20 and May 20) and two New Moons in Capricorn (January 7 and December 27).

Five Moons That Count Double

An eclipse is a New or Full Moon that happens close enough to the Moon’s nodes for the Sun, Moon and Earth to line up in three dimensions. Astrologers treat eclipse lunations as the strongest of the year: their effects are said to unfold over months rather than weeks. 2027 opens a new series on the Aquarius and Leo axis and closes the old Virgo and Pisces one.

February 6, annular solar eclipse at 17° Aquarius. A “ring of fire” New Moon, visible as annular from southern South America and parts of Africa, and the first solar eclipse of the new Aquarius series. It falls on Chinese New Year, two days after Lichun begins the Fire Goat year.

February 20, penumbral lunar eclipse at 2° Virgo. The last eclipse of the Virgo and Pisces series that began in 2025. Mars is at opposition the day before, in the same early degrees of Virgo and retrograde, so the eclipsed Full Moon and a bright Mars share the sky.

July 18, penumbral lunar eclipse at 25° Capricorn. A very slight penumbral eclipse, hard to notice by eye, and astrologically the quiet opener of the summer eclipse season.

August 17, penumbral lunar eclipse at 24° Aquarius. The closing eclipse of the year, fifteen days after the total eclipse, back on the Aquarius side of the axis. Every eclipse of the year, with paths and degrees, is in the 2027 eclipse calendar.

The Extra Moons of 2027

There are two definitions of a Blue Moon. The modern one, a second Full Moon in a single calendar month, does not occur in 2027: every month has at most one. The older, seasonal definition does. Between the March equinox (March 20) and the June solstice (June 21) there are four Full Moons, on March 22, April 20, May 20 and June 19, instead of the usual three. By the seasonal rule the third of the four is the Blue Moon, which makes May 20, 2027 the year’s Blue Moon.

A Black Moon is the New Moon equivalent: a second New Moon in one calendar month. August 2027 has two, the eclipse New Moon on August 2 and a second on August 31 in Virgo. Neither label carries traditional astrological weight, but both mark a month with an extra lunation in it.

Two Scorpio Full Moons, Two Capricorn New Moons

A Full Moon falls in the sign opposite the Sun. On April 20 the Sun is at the very start of Taurus and on May 20 at the very end of it, so both Full Moons land in Scorpio: the first at 0°37′, the second at 29°13′. For Scorpio natives, and anyone with planets at the start or end of Scorpio or Taurus, spring 2027 carries two culminations in the same part of the chart.

The same arithmetic gives Capricorn two New Moons. Lunations fall about eleven days earlier each year, and in 2027 the year both opens (January 7, 17° Capricorn) and closes (December 27, 5° Capricorn) with a New Moon in the sign. Two fresh starts in one sign within a calendar year is a mark of Capricorn’s year of foundations.

The Traditional Names for 2027

The names most often used in English come from North American and European almanac tradition and follow the month: the Wolf Moon (January 22), Snow Moon (February 20), Worm Moon (March 22), Pink Moon (April 20), Flower Moon (May 20), Strawberry Moon (June 19), Buck Moon (July 18), Sturgeon Moon (August 17), Harvest Moon (September 15), Hunter’s Moon (October 15), Beaver Moon (November 14) and Cold Moon (December 13).

The Harvest Moon is always the Full Moon nearest the September equinox. In 2027 the equinox falls on September 23, so the September 15 Full Moon takes the name, eight days before it, and the October 15 Full Moon becomes the Hunter’s Moon.

How to Use New and Full Moons

The lunar month is the simplest rhythm in astrology. A New Moon is the dark start of the cycle, the traditional moment to set an intention or begin something small. The Full Moon about two weeks later is the culmination, when what you started becomes visible, and the waning half is for finishing and letting go. Eclipse lunations amplify the pattern and tend to bring endings and beginnings that were not chosen.

The sign tells you the theme; the house tells you where it lands for you. A New Moon in Libra is about partnership and balance in general, but it falls in a specific house of your own chart, and that house is where the fresh start shows up.
