On Saturday, July 22, 2028, at 02:55 UTC, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and lays a shadow 231 kilometres wide across the southern hemisphere. The shadow makes landfall on the Kimberley coast of Western Australia near Kununurra, crosses the Northern Territory past Karlu Karlu, sweeps through south west Queensland, enters New South Wales above Dubbo, and then does something total eclipses almost never do.
It passes directly over the centre of a major city.
The centre line runs roughly two kilometres from the Sydney central business district. Not near the city. Not across its outer suburbs. Over it. The harbour, the bridge, the opera house and about five million people stand inside the path of totality for three minutes and forty nine seconds in the early afternoon.
Total eclipses are not rare. Total eclipses over the middle of a large city are. Any given place waits an average of roughly 375 years.
The last total solar eclipse visible from Sydney was on March 26, 1857, and it gave the city one minute and fifty four seconds. Australia was not yet a federation. Sydney was a colonial port of about eighty thousand people. Nobody now living saw it, and nobody now living has a relative who did.
The next one after 2028 does not arrive until 2858. That is a gap of eight hundred and thirty years on the far side, and a gap of one hundred and seventy one years on the near side. For the city of Sydney, this is not a recurring event with a long period. For every practical purpose it is a single occurrence.
Local times below are Australian Eastern Standard Time. July is winter in Sydney, so the Sun sits low and to the north, roughly thirty degrees above the horizon, which puts the eclipsed Sun over the northern skyline rather than overhead.
The partial phase opens around 12:40pm, when the Moon takes its first bite from the western edge of the Sun. For the next eighty minutes almost nothing seems to happen, which is the part every first time observer underestimates: even a Sun that is ninety per cent covered still reads as a bright afternoon. The change arrives in the final two minutes, and it arrives fast.
Totality begins just before 2pm and maximum eclipse falls at about 2:01pm. For three minutes and forty nine seconds the corona is visible to the naked eye, the horizon carries a false sunset in every direction at once, and the temperature drops. The partial phase closes around 3:14pm.
You will find the Sydney duration quoted as three minutes forty four, three minutes forty five, and three minutes forty nine, and all three are defensible. NASA’s circumstances table for Sydney gives 3m49s. Several observing guides give figures three to five seconds shorter.
The disagreement is not sloppiness. It is geometry. Because the centre line passes about two kilometres from the city centre rather than through it, duration changes measurably across the metropolitan area: a few seconds longer toward the centre line, shorter as you move to the edge of the path, and zero if you go far enough. A single number for a city forty kilometres wide is an approximation by definition. Anyone travelling for this should compute totality for the exact spot they intend to stand on, not for the city name.
Greatest eclipse falls at 02:55:27 UTC, and the greatest duration anywhere along the track is five minutes and ten seconds, well out over the Indian Ocean before the shadow reaches land. The Australian leg still carries better than three minutes across most of its width.
After leaving the New South Wales coast the shadow crosses the Tasman Sea and reaches the South Island of New Zealand close to sunset, taking in Queenstown and Dunedin, before lifting off the Earth in the South Pacific. An eclipse low to the horizon is harder to observe and far more photogenic, so the New Zealand end of this track will produce most of the images people remember.
At the moment of greatest eclipse the Moon sits 364,205 kilometres from Earth, comfortably inside its mean distance of 384,400 kilometres. A closer Moon casts a wider shadow and covers more of the solar disc, which is why the magnitude reaches 1.056 and the path opens to 231 kilometres. Earth is also near aphelion in July, so the solar disc is at its smallest for the year. Both factors push the same way.
The eclipse falls at 29 degrees Cancer. The Sun is at 29 degrees 50 minutes and the Moon at 29 degrees 46 minutes, which puts the whole event inside the final ten minutes of arc of the sign.
Traditional astrology calls the twenty ninth degree the anaretic degree, and treats it as the exit door. It is the last room in a sign, the place where the sign’s business is finished rather than begun. An eclipse there does not open a subject. It closes one.
Cancer’s subject is home. Not property, but belonging: where you are from, what you call yours, who counts as family, what a country decides its own borders mean. An eclipse at the exit of Cancer, falling on a harbour city that a colonial power founded as an outpost and that has argued about who belongs there ever since, is not a subtle piece of symbolism.
The final degree of Cancer is the exit door of the sign. What a country calls home, tested in public.
Eclipses land on one of two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. This one falls on the South Node, about eleven hours from the exact crossing, which is tight.
The distinction matters more than most eclipse writing admits. North Node eclipses tend to read as intake: something new arrives and asks to be taken on. South Node eclipses read as release: something long carried is set down, and the setting down is rarely voluntary. A South Node eclipse at the final degree of Cancer is release language twice over, in the sign of home and at the degree of endings.
Eclipses arrive in pairs or triples, and this one is the second of a pair. A partial lunar eclipse opens the season on July 6, 2028, at 15 degrees Capricorn, sitting on the North Node, directly opposite the sign the solar eclipse will close sixteen days later. Cancer and Capricorn are the home and the world, the private and the public, the family and the institution. The season sets them against each other and then shuts the Cancer door.
Neptune stations retrograde on July 11, 2028, at 8 degrees Aries, five days after the lunar eclipse and eleven days before totality reaches Sydney, so the whole corridor runs under a planet that has just changed direction.
Accommodation along the Australian track is already the constraint rather than the astronomy. Sydney is the only large city on the path, and it is the only one where a visitor can stand in the centre of a capital and watch the corona without travelling to a field. The consequence is predictable, and the people who have run eclipse trips before booked in 2025 and 2026.
Two things are worth knowing regardless of where you stand. Winter in Sydney is the dry half of the year but not a guaranteed clear sky, so mobility on the day is worth more than a perfect spot chosen in advance. And the Sun sits about thirty degrees up in the northern sky, so a site with a clear northern horizon matters more than one with a clear overhead view.
