Authority is your inner decision-making mechanism — how your body knows yes from no, prior to your mind weighing in. There are seven authorities in Human Design: Emotional (wait through a wave for clarity at the bottom), Sacral (gut response — uh-huh or unh-unh), Splenic (the first quiet hit in the moment, speaks once), Ego/Heart (your own voice in conversation), Self-Projected (G-Center clarity through speaking it out loud), Mental (only for Projectors without an inner authority — sounding-board across a lunar cycle), and Lunar (Reflectors only — wait the full 28-day lunar cycle before any major decision).

Defined centers are filled with their color in the chart — they broadcast a fixed, reliable energy that doesn't change. Whatever your defined Sacral, Throat, or Heart broadcasts, it broadcasts to every room you enter. Open or undefined centers are blank — they take in and amplify others' energy in that theme. Lived unconsciously, open centers are where you absorb conditioning (mistake others' feelings/identity/urgency for your own). Personality is your conscious self — the gates activated by planets at the moment of your birth. This is the ~70% of your design you can recognize and feel yourself doing. Human Design is built ON astrology — the gate positions are derived from the same planetary ecliptic longitudes — but it asks a different question. Astrology asks "what is the cosmic weather of your life"; Human Design asks "how was your energetic operating system wired." Astrology gives you Sun in Aquarius. Human Design tells you exactly which I Ching hexagram that Sun activates, what center it lights up, and how that affects your decision-making. They're complementary, not redundant — Cosmic Design reads both together.

Both Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral Center, so both follow the Strategy of waiting to respond — letting the body's response (uh-huh / unh-unh) lead the decision. The difference: Manifesting Generators also have a motor (Sacral, Heart, Solar Plexus, or Root) connected to the Throat, which means after the sacral responds yes, they're built to MOVE on it AND inform people first. Generators respond; Manifesting Generators respond, then inform, then initiate. MGs are the multi-track engine — they skip steps and circle back. The Not-Self is frustration + anger when this isn't lived correctly.

Different questions, different accuracy. Astrology forecasts what's happening; Human Design diagnoses how you're built. HD's accuracy isn't about predicting events — it's about giving you a language for patterns you already know. Once you read your authority correctly (e.g. Emotional → wait the wave), you can run a 30-day experiment and feel whether the prescription works in your body. That's how HD validates itself: through lived experience, not external proof. The chart calculation itself uses standard ephemeris data — same math astrologers use.

The 34-57 Channel of Power connects Gate 34 (Sacral, the gate of pure power) and Gate 57 (Spleen, the gate of intuitive clarity). When defined, this channel makes the person responsive in the most archetypal way — their sacral life-force is met with intuitive certainty about what to respond to. The trap: trying to manufacture the response when nothing's calling. The gift: when something does light them up, the body knows the timing before the mind does. Like every channel, it's a fixed life theme, not a personality trait.

You can't accurately — your Type depends on which centers are defined in your chart, which requires computing the exact gate activations from your birth date, time, and location. There's no shortcut from a personality quiz; HD isn't self-reported.
