Cousto uses Mars's synodic period rather than his sidereal year because the synodic cycle — the rhythm of Mars in relation to Earth — has historically been the primary basis of Martian astrological timing. The 779.94-day synodic period corresponds to a frequency of approximately 0.0000000148 Hz. Doubling 32 times yields 144.72 Hz, sitting low in the audible range, close to 141.27 Hz (Mercury) and 147.85 Hz (Saturn). These three inner-cluster planetary tones are within five Hz of each other.
