Chokmah Wisdom

Chokmah is the second sephirah of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life — Wisdom, the masculine principle of pure dynamic force that initiates all creation. The first outflow. Raw, undifferentiated, masculine force — the spark that makes form possible.

Chokmah (חָכְמָה, Chokmah / Hokhmah) is the 2nd sephirah on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It represents the primordial outflowing of force — pure, undifferentiated, dynamic. In Hermetic Qabalah it is the great masculine principle, the seed before the field.

What is Chokmah?

Chokmah — Wisdom — is the second sephirah, the first ray that breaks the silence of Kether. It is force without form, the dynamic outflow that has not yet met anything to shape it. The Kabbalists called it Abba, the Supernal Father, because it provides the seed-energy that the Supernal Mother (Binah) will gestate into the structured cosmos.

Chokmah corresponds to Mazloth, the Sphere of the Zodiac — the ring of stars within which all the planets move. It is the field of pattern itself, before any single pattern crystallizes. Modern Hermetic practitioners often link it to Uranus, the planet of sudden insight and revolutionary force, because Chokmah is wisdom that arrives whole, not wisdom that is reasoned out.

On the Pillar of Mercy, Chokmah sits opposite Binah on the Pillar of Severity. Together they form the Supernal Triangle with Kether — the three sephirot that exist above the Abyss, beyond the realm of incarnated experience. The Abyss (Daath) is the gap a soul must cross to reach Chokmah directly.

Chokmah in Your Birth Chart

When Chokmah is alive in your chart, you receive insight as flash and lightning rather than as deduction. Chokmah-strong people are visionaries, prophets, fathers of new fields. They often struggle to explain how they know what they know — they simply receive. The work is to find a Binah-strong partner or practice that can give the insight a vessel before it dissipates.

Shadow. The shadow of Chokmah is force without container — insight that scatters because it never becomes a thing. Chokmah needs Binah to manifest. Without it, you become a person of brilliant fragments who builds nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chokmah in Kabbalah?

Chokmah (חָכְמָה, 'wisdom') is the second sephirah on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the first emanation from Kether. It represents pure dynamic force — the masculine outflowing principle, called Abba (the Supernal Father). It corresponds to the Sphere of the Zodiac and is associated with sudden, whole-cloth insight.

Which planet rules Chokmah?

In classical Hermetic Qabalah, Chokmah corresponds to Mazloth — the Sphere of the Zodiac — which sits beyond the planetary spheres. In modern attributions popularized after the discovery of the outer planets, Chokmah is often linked to Uranus, the planet of revolutionary insight and breakthrough.

What is the difference between Chokmah and Binah?

Chokmah is dynamic, masculine, force-without-form (Abba, the Supernal Father). Binah is receptive, feminine, form-without-force (Aima, the Supernal Mother). Together they generate the structured cosmos — Chokmah supplies the seed-energy, Binah gives it shape and limit. Neither is complete without the other.

What does Chokmah mean for spiritual practice?

Chokmah is approached through practices that cultivate openness to sudden insight: contemplative silence, divinatory work, prophetic states. It is associated with the divine name Yah, the archangel Raziel ('Secret of God'), and the angelic order Auphanim (the Wheels of the divine chariot).

How is Chokmah expressed in a birth chart?

Chokmah is touched in a chart when the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant connect to paths reaching the Pillar of Mercy — particularly The Emperor (Aries), The Hierophant (Taurus on its way down), or The Fool. The Tree of Life Calculator maps your birth data to these paths to show exactly where Chokmah is alive in your configuration.
