Geburah Severity
Geburah is the fifth sephirah of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life — Severity or Strength, ruled by Mars, representing judgment, discipline, and the necessary destroyer that clears space for what must come. The disciplining fire. Severity, judgment, the destroyer that clears the field for what must come.
What is Geburah?
Geburah — Severity, also called Pachad (Fear) and Din (Judgment) — is the fifth sephirah, the disciplining counterforce to Chesed's expansion. Without Geburah, Chesed's giving becomes tyranny by smothering. Geburah is the surgeon's blade, the warrior's sword, the necessary destruction that clears the field for what must grow.
Geburah corresponds to Mars — Madim, the Red One — the planet of will, courage, decisive action, and conflict. Its color is red, its body-correspondence is the right arm (the sword arm in most esoteric traditions), and its archangel is Khamael, the burning one. The Seraphim — the angelic order of fire — answer to Geburah.
On the Pillar of Severity, Geburah sits between Binah (the structuring mother) and Hod (the analytic mind). Together they form the cutting, limiting, formal side of the Tree. To work consciously with Geburah is to learn the difference between cruelty and necessary severity — when the no must be spoken, the boundary held, the dead branch cut away.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Geburah in Kabbalah?
Geburah (גְּבוּרָה, 'severity'; also called Pachad 'fear' or Din 'judgment') is the fifth sephirah on the Tree of Life. It corresponds to Mars and represents the disciplining force — necessary destruction, warrior courage, the sword that cuts what must be cut so the next thing can grow.
Which planet rules Geburah?
Geburah corresponds to Mars — Madim in Hebrew, 'the red one'. Mars is the planet of will, decisive action, conflict, and courage. Strong Mars placements in a birth chart often indicate a Geburah-active soul.
Is Geburah evil?
No — Geburah is necessary, not evil. The vice of Geburah (cruelty, wanton destruction) is what severity becomes when it loses contact with mercy (Chesed across the Pillars). Healthy Geburah is the surgeon's blade and the boundary-keeper. Without it, generosity becomes smothering and form cannot evolve.
What is the virtue of Geburah?
The virtue of Geburah is Energy and Courage — the willingness to act decisively, to set boundaries, to destroy what must be destroyed in service of what must come next. The vice is Cruelty: severity uncoupled from purpose.
How does Geburah show up in a birth chart?
Geburah is alive through strong Mars placements (especially Mars on the angles or in aspect to the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant), and through path-connections to the Pillar of Severity. The Tree of Life Calculator identifies which sephirot — including Geburah — your specific configuration activates.
